Ian Fennelly

Ian has been a professional artist most of his life. He specializes in watercolour painting and spends most of his life travelling and painting on location. Through the years, Ian developed a keen sense of observation that allows him to include not only the visuals but also the atmosphere, smells, noise and buzz of a place in his work.

Aside from painting, Ian is a passionate art teacher who loves to support artists in their creative journey in whichever way he can.

What will I learn?

In each class, you will complete an entire painting while following Ian's sketching, drawing and painting techniques. As your understanding progresses, each session will increase in difficulty to push you out of your comfort zone and help you grow as an artist.

Ian's learning objectives for this course:

  • To see and notice things before putting pen onto paper;

  • To use pencils to establish a simple structure and composition;

  • To use watercolours to help create both a descriptive and emotional response to the subject;

  • To use fineliners to help discover and record the detailed street furniture;

  • To let the picture breathe and focus attention on key areas.

At the end of this program, you will have a deeper understanding of the medium and the process. In addition, you'll be capable of creating an emotional connection between your work and the audience.

Will this course be completely live?

Ian will be there every week, live, to teach and answer your questions. The video portion is pre-recorded so we can guarantee high quality videos.

You will be able to participate live through the chat function.

During the course, Ian will also address questions from participants on the exclusive Facebook group for the course.

At the end of the course, we will do a live Feedback session with Ian. You'll be able to participate via chat, ask him all your questions, and get feedback on your final assignment.

What if I can't attend all the Live classes?

No Problem! Each week has an assigned class. You are welcome to watch the Live class with your colleagues and Ian Fennelly, or the class recording at your own time during the week.

I'm a subscriber. Do I have to purchase the course separately?

This course is free for all Subscribers.

Please email us at hello@etchrstudio.com to indicate your interest in participating, and you are all set.

If you'd like to subscribe, please go to this page.

*Program participation is withdrawn once the subscription is no longer active.

How detailed would the feedback be?

At the end of each class, you will have completed a painting. If you submit it on the private Facebook group asking for critique, you will get feedback from Ian and other group members.

At the end of the course, Ian will also provide feedback on your final pieces in a Live Feedback Session.

However, it is worth noting that this feedback will be at a high level; something to guide your next steps. This is also reflective of the price being charged for the 4-class series plus the support and feedback provided along the way.

What art supplies will I need?

You can do the whole course with these:

  1. A pencil

  2. Watercolour paint set

  3. Brush pens (or watercolour brushes and water)

  4. Fine liners

  5. A3 watercolour paper

For more details, such as which colours Ian uses, check the complete list in the Course PDF.
