He is such a super teacher (and coming from a retired teacher, that is great praise!). I love the way he explains everything.

Pedro Loureiro

Pedro Loureiro is an architecture illustrator from Lisbon, Portugal. As a child, he began his artistic career by copying his favourite comic book panels. Later he took drawing classes in architecture school and joined the Urban Sketchers community, consolidating his path into the professional art world.

His goal for teaching is for his students to realise how perception changes when seeing the world through sketching. Everyone can learn to draw. Pedro uses sketching as a tool of perception and understanding of surroundings, exciting characters, and stories of the everyday.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will I learn in each class?

Here is a short description for every single class:

Session 1: Getting Started: Basic Drawing Techniques & Tools

Aside from covering plenty of sketching supplies, Pedro will teach you about the different lines you can create with a simple pen and what you can use them for.

Session 2: Learn to See: Blind Sketching with Eyes Wide Open

Change the way you look at your subject by practising blind-contour drawing. At the end of this lesson, you will be able to confidently sketch an object in continuous lines without looking at the paper.

Session 3: Volume, Textures, and Shadows

Visualise volume, texture and shadow through hatching, cross-hatching and curved textures. Then, translate that tridimensional information to the flat surface of the paper. At the end of this lesson, you will be able to perceive and represent a shaded surface, a projected shadow and a curved surface, and decide where the shadow ends and the light begins.

Session 4: Shapes: Perspective and Facing the Blank Page

Learn how to measure your subject, imply perspective, and better understand what to leave out. At the end of today's lesson, you will be able to sketch an actual urban scene… easily.

Session 5: Focus Your Sketch (and Your Story)

Learn the power of filtering elements, negative space and connections. At the end of this lesson, you will be able to decide the story you want to tell with your sketch and focus your time and energy to better convey that story. As a result, your sketches will be clearer, more engaging, and meaningful.

Session 6: Composition 101: Getting Fancy With Your Page

Learn 5 simple composition tricks that will boost your art and help you decide what to sketch, where to sketch, and what to include and exclude in your composition - and how to be efficient about it. At the end of this class, you will know how to make all the elements in your sketch work.

Will this course be completely live?

Every class will be streamed live, but the content is pre-recorded. The teacher will be present during the first class to welcome you in person and answer any questions you have. Pedro will also be present for the last class to address any questions so you can to complete the course with confidence and support.

Our hosts will do a weekly live stream in which they play the recorded class. You will be able to participate live through the chat function. The host will be there to address all your questions and pause the video if needed.

During the course, Pedro will also address questions from participants on the exclusive Facebook group for the course.

At the end of the course, we will do a fully live Q&A session with Pedro. You'll be able to participate via chat, ask him all your questions, and get feedback on your final assignment.

What if I can't attend all the Live classes?

No Problem! Each week has an assigned class. You are welcome to join the Live class hosted by our Hosts and watch the class with other participants or Watch the recording of the class at your own time during the week.

*Program participation is withdrawn once the subscription is no longer active.

I've purchased an earlier version of this course. Do I have to enrol again?

No, you don't! You have free access to this new and improved version of the program.

We first launched this course back in 2021, but with a different structure, without the community support, no study groups, and with no homework assignments.

Since the first time we did this course, we have collected all your feedback. Afterwards, we returned to the drawing board and re-recorded everything for better quality and clarity.

If you have already purchased the previous version, please email us at hello@etchrstudio.com, and we will set up your access to this program.

How much will I be able to interact with the Artist, Pedro?

For the Live viewing of the first and last class, Pedro will be present Live. He will be available to answer any questions.

For the the other four classes, the class will be hosted by other knowledgeable Artists.

During the course, Pedro will be active on the private Facebook group and answer any questions.

How detailed would the feedback be?

Each class will present you with a new challenge assignment. If you submit it on the private Facebook group asking for critique, you will get feedback from Pedro and other group members.

At the end of the course, Pedro will also provide feedback on your final pieces in a Live Feedback Session.

However, it is worth noting that this feedback will be at a high level; something to guide your next steps. This is also reflective of the price being charged for the 6-class series plus the support and feedback provided along the way.

What art supplies will I need?

You can do the whole course with these:

  1. Loose sheets of paper or a sketchpad

  2. A simple rollerball pen

However, we highly encourage you to check the complete list of all the supplies used in this PDF.

I still have questions!

We're here to help. Please shoot us an email at hello@etchrstudio.com and we will get back to you as quickly as possible.
