Recording: Materials

Learn the different kinds of watercolour paper, brushes and paints.


Live Session 1: Watercolour Relationships: Wetness, Dryness and Washes

Learn about washes, an essential watercolour technique that will give life to any painting, as well as understanding the relationship between water, paper and paint.


Live Session 2: Layering and Glazes

Learn how to use darks and lights to your advantage, as well as the basics of layering and glazes while painting a landscape from your head.


Live Session 3: Negative Space and Masking

Paint white subjects and understand how to apply different masking techniques.


Live Session 4: Tone

Learn how to paint in terms of light to dark; and how to use tone to your advantage. The class will focus on how to consider tonalities when painting in watercolour, and how that will unlock how to make rich and nuanced paintings.


Live Session 5: Colour

Go through the basics of colour theory, temperature and intensity, and how to apply these in your paintings.


Live Session 6: Form and Texture

Learn how to convey convincing forms and textures through painting with watercolour.


By the end of this course, you'll possess the knowledge and skills to embark on your journey as a proficient watercolour artist.

How long is each class?

The classes have different lengths. We prioritise the quality of information over time consistency. Here's how long we anticipate each live class to last:


Recording: Materials, Colour Mixing and Control

Recording Length: 30min


Session 1: Watercolour Relationships: Wetness, Dryness and Washes 

Live Class length (with time for a Q&A at the end): 90min


Session 2: Layering and Glazes

Live Class length (with time for a Q&A at the end): 90min


Session 3: Negative Space and Masking

Class length (with time for a Q&A at the end): 60min


Session 4: Tone

Live Class length (with time for a Q&A at the end): 90min


Session 5: Colour

Will this course be completely live?

Jun-Pierre will do a live stream for every class. The video and audio is pre-recorded to ensure the best quality with minimum technical issues, but Jun will be speaking through the introduction, Q&A and conclusion.


You will be able to participate live through the chat function. The teacher and the host will address all your questions and pause the video if needed.


After each live session, the recording will be available for replay.


At the end of the course, we will do a fully live Feedback session with Jun. You'll be able to participate via chat, ask all your questions, and get feedback on your final assignment.

What if I can't attend all the Live classes?

No Problem! Each week has an assigned class. You are welcome to join the Live class and watch the class with other participants or watch the recording of the class at your own time during the week.

How much will I be able to interact with the Artist, Jun-Pierre?

Jun will be present for every single class. He will be available to answer any questions.

How detailed would the feedback be?

Each class will present you with a new challenge assignment. If you submit it on the Etchr website asking for critique, you will get feedback from Jun and other group members.


At the end of the course, Jun will also provide feedback on your final piece in a Live Feedback Session.


However, it is worth noting that this feedback will be at a high level; something to guide your next steps. This is also reflective of the price being charged for the 6-class series plus the support and feedback provided along the way.

What art supplies will I need?

Here's the complete list of supplies:

  • Watercolour paints (tube or pan - specific colour in the PDF below)

  • Watercolour brushes in different sizes (suggested: Medium sized flat brush, large and small round brush,chinese ink brush)

  • Cold press watercolour paper (suggested: 140 lb/300g)

  • Masking fluid

  • Sponge

  • Table salt

  • Pencil and eraser

  • Paper towel, 2 cups of water

  • Hair dryer (optional)

  • White paint, like gouache white or opaque white (optional)

  • Black India ink (optional)
