So, one of the reasons I loved Sarah Van Dongen's class was because I learned to let my self be a little bit more free in my work. I still need to practice but I think I'm improving.

OMG I had so much fun joining Sarah Van Dongen. I used what I had available which was watercolour and very blunt coloured pencils but I really enjoyed playing.

From Sarah van Dongen

Hello! My name is Sarah van Dongen and I’m a Dutch illustrator based in Amsterdam. Ever since I was old enough I have been drawing and creating story-worlds. This is also one of the reasons why I studied comparative literature and got my masters in contemporary literature in which I focussed on children’s books.

I take my sketchbooks and art supplies everywhere, which results in illustrations based on observation and daily life. Themes that I like to explore in illustration are: gardens and food, social interactions and mental health, and childhood and imagination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get my money back if I don't like the course?

We offer a no-questions-asked 14-day money-back guarantee, counting from the purchase date.

What will I learn?

CLASS CURRICULUM:

Session 1: Drawing is Fundamental

Learn the importance of drawing in illustration. First, you'll develop strong hand-eye coordination using practice exercises that build your confidence with a pencil. Then, Sarah will teach you how to start drawing from observation and photos, plus mark-making and simplifying shapes when drawing people.

Session 2: Mixing Media

Explore art materials, how to combine them successfully, and understand the common issues when mixing media. Then, you'll practice your new techniques starting with gouache and adding colour in other ways.

Session 3: Faces and Figures

Apply illustration theory with a limited palette for faces and figures. You'll focus on illustrating people wearing clothes. Sarah will walk you through creating a pattern for clothing, and you'll practice making patterns with mixed media.

Session 4: Sensational Scenes

Expand on colour theory by focusing on warm and cool palettes. You'll do a scene exercise to achieve the correct perspective. Sarah will teach you to compose the drawing so your scene makes sense.

Session 5: Bring it Home

Integrate mixed media techniques with colour theory for an entire scene. Sarah will help you with figures and perspective, and you'll add homey elements that fit your new illustrative style.
