Artist and Teacher
What is this Course about?
If we can draw the box the object fits in, we can draw the object...
Tina shows us how this works. She simplifies a still life in building blocks; by constructing a perspective underdrawing to guide her to a successful drawing. This drawing shows the correct proportion and depth. The learning doesn’t stop there! See how she adds shade/shadows and color to finish.
In this intermediate drawing course, you will learn how to analyze a reference photo, more about perspective, how to approach more challenging angles, and how to add more character to the objects with textures, details, and embellishments.

A great instructor who shares more than what we pay for.
Hi, my name is Tina Hotchkiss. I was raised in central Ohio on a horse farm. I received a Bachelor's degree in Arts and Sciences from The Ohio State University. I worked as a commercial and residential designer for 15 years. During those 15 years, I fell in love with the drawing and rendering processes of design. Wanting to share the skills I learned, I decided to teach drawing to people with a mutual love for the arts.

What will I learn in each class?
Great question! Here is a short description for every single class:
Session 1: Stack of Books
Learn how to use vanishing points of different subjects as Tina shows you how to draw a stack of books using different vanishing points for each book on the same horizon line/eye level. This creates a still life of 3 books stacked, all placed at different angles. You will also learn to add lettering with proper perspective and artistic personality using a bit of colour. By the end of this class, you'll be able to freehand underdrawing of boxes/books successfully.
Session 2: Paint Tube
Learn how to draw cylinders, circles, and tapering objects while drawing a paint tube. You will go through the process of starting with a box first, carving out the cylindrical tub shape of the image in the reference photo, and finishing it by adding details of squeeze marks and lettering to create this item. By the end of this class, you'll be able to see any cylindrical and circular objects and draw them freely.
Session 3: Paint Brush
Learn how to draw narrow objects while drawing a paint brush, starting with a box it fits in and carving the shape out of that box. Learn how to analyze the shape of the brush and divide the box into the parts of a paint brush, and add details as a final step to have a successful drawing.
Session 4: Watercolour Tin
Learn how to draw a still life of a watercolour tin with a box by using an under-drawing block-out to create the view you want. In this class, the student learns how to alter the view shown in the reference photo. What happens when the horizon line is raised and lowered? What view does the artist want? All of these questions will guide you through drawing a successful piece.
Session 5: Bringing it all together - Brayer
Bring all the skills learned in the previous class and incorporate them in one drawing of a brayer. A brayer is a complex shape with many angles to place. In this class, Tina will show you how to analyze the reference photo to find the horizon line/eye level and place the vanishing points. You will also learn how an under-drawing block-out simplifies objects into basic shapes. If we can draw the box the object fits in, we can draw any object!
How long is each class?
Each class will be around 90 minutes.
Will this course be completely live?
Pretty much, yes. The teacher will do a live stream for every class. All audio will be live, but the art-making portion is pre-recorded to ensure the best quality with minimum technical issues.
You will be able to participate live through the chat function. The teacher and the host will address all your questions and pause the video if needed.
After each live session, the recording will be available for replay.
During the course, the teacher will also address questions from participants on the Etchr website.
At the end of the course, we will do a fully live Feedback session with the teacher. You'll be able to participate via chat, ask all your questions, and get feedback on your final assignment.
What if I can't attend all the Live classes?
No Problem! Each week has an assigned class. You are welcome to join the Live class and watch the class with other participants or watch the recording of the class at your own time during the week.
We also have a recorded video for each homework that we will upload right after the Live Class takes place.
I'm a subscriber. Do I have to purchase this course separately?
How much will I be able to interact with the Artist?
The teacher will be present for every single class, available to answer any questions.
How detailed would the feedback be?
Each class will present you with a new challenge assignment. If you submit it on the Etchr website asking for critique, you will get feedback from the teacher and other group members.
At the end of the course, the teacher will also provide feedback on your final piece in a Live Feedback Session.
However, it is worth noting that this feedback will be at a high level; something to guide your next steps. This is also reflective of the price being charged for the 6-class series plus the support and feedback provided along the way.
