This is a structured course guided by a curriculum that is broken down into six classes. Designed and taught by Tina Hotchkiss (@tinasartforms), a professional artist and teacher, this course will teach you how to draw from observation, allowing you to master the skills needed to start your artistic journey.
This course is suitable for absolute beginners.
COURSE CURRICULUM:
Session 1: Adding Dimension to Shapes
Length: 1:30h
Understand how cubes sit in space. Learn how to draw straight lines and add depth to your subject using one and two-point perspectives.
Session 2: Drawing Simple Objects
Length: 1h
Take depth and dimension further by applying your knowledge to drawing simple closed and open objects, like filling cabinets and tables. At the end of this class, you will be able to use perspective, place your objects in space, and accurately draw simple straight objects, such as books.
Session 3: Drawing Curved Objects
Length: 1h
Apply everything you learned, but this time, to curved objects in space. Learn how to carve a cylinder out of a cube while developing a sketching hand and training your eye to see as an artist. At the end of this class, you will be able to accurately draw simple rounded objects, like vases and cups, and place them in space.
Session 4: Complex Curved Objects
Length: 1h
Learn how to connect different-size ovals for complex curves and make cones from cylinders. At the end of this class, you'll be able to accurately draw more complex curved objects, such as wine bottles and intricate vases.
Session 5: Spheres
Length: 1:30h
Develop a sketching hand for circles that don't look stiff and misshapen. Create a value scale and learn how to layer graphite to create smooth transitions of values. At the end of this class, you will understand value, shade, shadow and depth.
Session 6: Complete a Still Life Drawing
Length: 3h
Apply everything you learned while drawing a still-life composition. Join Tina and draw alongside her as you learn how to:
Set up your subject and understand where to start drawing;
Draw each object in proportion to the other;
Compose your drawing;
Apply shade, shadow, and create the illusion of 3D objects that occupy space
At the end of this course, you will understand the foundational aspects of 1 and 2-point perspective, values, shape, shade, shadow, dimension, placement and depth, thus, acquiring the tools and knowledge to draw accurately from observation.
